The Parent visa allows parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents to live in Australia permanently or temporarily to reunite and enjoy family life together. Australia offers several types of Parent visas to suit different circumstances, depending on your age, location at the time of application, and financial situation.

To apply for a Parent visa, you must:

Be the biological, adoptive, or stepparent of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen

Meet the Balance of Family Test, meaning at least half of your children live permanently in Australia, or more of your children live in Australia than in any other country

Have a sponsor, usually your child, who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident

For aged parent visas, be of Australian pension age at the time of application

Some subclasses also require you to be onshore at the time of application and decision, while others allow you to apply from outside Australia.
For most Parent visas, the sponsor must provide an Assurance of Support, which is a financial commitment to support the applicant and avoid dependence on Australia’s welfare system. The AoS includes a bond and applies to each family unit included in the application.
The 870 temporary visa lets a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the visa, a parent must be:

Who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Sponsors must meet the following criteria:

Sponsors will need to have a taxable income of at least $83,454.80 – it can be a combined income of partners

The sponsor/parent relationship requirements (ie: a parent must be the biological, adoptive, or step-parent of the sponsor and a step-parent can only apply if they are still in a married/de facto relationship with a biological parent of the sponsor)

Be aged at least 18 years of age

Be an Australian citizen/permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who has been usually resident in Australia for four years

Have met any prior sponsorship obligations

Have no adverse information unless it is reasonable to disregard the information

Ezyvisa Immigration Services

Have no debts to the Commonwealth or public health debts unless appropriate arrangements have been made for payment

A minimum household income threshold (based on the income of the sponsor, or the combined income of the sponsor and their spouse/partner and/or another child of the parent)

Provide police clearances for any country they have spent more than 12 months cumulatively in during the past 10 years

Authorise information to be shared with the visa applicant.

Sponsors must also agree to comply with sponsorship obligations in relation to the parent(s) they are sponsoring.

Visa eligibility

Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa applicants must:

Be sponsored by a person who is an approved parent sponsor

Be at least 18 years of age

Be outside Australia (unless invited in writing to apply by the Department), for at least 90 days if the applicant holds or has previously held a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa

Not have engaged in payment for visas conduct

Provide evidence of access to funds

Provide evidence of health insurance

Not have an outstanding public health debt (unless appropriate arrangements have been made to repay the debt)

Satisfy health, character, and national security requirements.

Family Balance Test

Unlike permanent Parent visas, there is no Balance of Family Test requirement for this visa, meaning a visa applicant is not required to have more than half of their children residing in Australia.
The Child visa allows the child of an Australian citizen, permanent resident to live in Australia with their parent. This visa offers a direct pathway to permanent residency, helping to reunite families and provide children with the opportunity to grow and thrive in Australia.

There are two main types of Child visas:

Subclass 101 – Child visa (Offshore): For children applying from outside Australia.

Subclass 802 – Child visa (Onshore): For children already in Australia at the time of application.

Both visas grant the child permanent residency once approved.
To be eligible for a Child visa, the applicant must:

Be the biological, adopted, or stepchild of an Australian citizen or permanent resident

Be under 25 years of age at the time of application

Ezyvisa Immigration Services

Be single – not married, engaged, or in a de facto relationship

Be financially dependent on the sponsoring parent if over 18 years of age

If the child is over 18, they must be a full-time student or have a disability that prevents them from working.
The sponsoring parent must:

Be biologically related to the applicant (although adoptive parents or stepparents may be eligible in certain circumstances)

Be at least 18 years of age (or have a spouse or de facto partner who meets this requirement and is eligible to sponsor)

Not have been convicted of, or currently facing prosecution for, any offences against a child (this also applies to the sponsor’s partner, if applicable)

The Dependent Child visa (subclass 445) is a temporary visa that allows the child of a parent who holds a temporary Partner visa (subclass 309 or 820) to join them in Australia while the parent awaits a decision on their permanent Partner visa (subclass 100 or 801). This visa ensures that children are not separated from their parent during the transition from temporary to permanent residency.

Once granted, the child can remain in Australia temporarily and will also become eligible to be included in the parent’s permanent Partner visa application.

(must apply outside of Australia and be outside of Australia at time of decision)

SUBCLASS 837

(must apply in Australia and be in Australia at time of decision)
An Orphan Relative visa is for a child whose parents are dead, permanently incapacitated or of unknown whereabouts. It allows a child in this situation to travel to/ stay permanently with their sponsoring relative in Australia.

The child must be:

You might be eligible for this visa if:

*Your near relative is your parent or your partner’s parent (including biological and step-parent), brother, sister, stepbrother or stepsister; child (including stepchild) who has turned 18 and is not a dependent child; or child (including stepchild) who has not yet turned 18 years of age and is not in your or your partner’s daily care and control.

Do not apply for this visa if:

You or your partner have any near relatives, who are usually living outside Australia, or are only living in Australia on a temporary visa, Bridging visa or unlawfully.

Your sponsor (or their partner) was the holder of, or sponsored someone else for, a Remaining Relative visa (subclass 835 or subclass 115), Preferential Family visa (subclass 104) or Family visa (subclass 806).

This visa is for some older people to migrate to Australia if they rely on an eligible relative in Australia to provide financial support.

You might be eligible for this visa if you:

This visa is for someone who needs to move to or stay in Australia for one of the following reasons:

Care for a relative in Australia with a long-term medical condition, or

Assist a relative providing this care to a member of their family unit.

A Carer visa is a permanent visa for people who want to live in Australia to provide substantial and continuing care or assistance for a relative who either:

Has a long-term medical condition that means they cannot look after themselves in practical aspects of daily life, or

Needs permanent or long-term practical support to help them care for a member of their family in their household with such a medical condition.

The relative must not be able to reasonably get the care they need from any other relative or from welfare, hospital, nursing or community services in Australia.

Subclass 116

You must make your application outside Australia and be outside Australia when it is granted.

Subclass 836

You must make your application in Australia and be in Australia when it is granted.

You can apply for this visa if the relative who needs care or assistance is usually resident in Australia. The relative must be your partner, child, parent, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew (or step-equivalent).
