Australia offers several types of Parent visas to suit different circumstances, depending on your age, location at the time of application, and financial situation.

Be the biological, adoptive, or stepparent of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen

Meet the Balance of Family Test, meaning at least half of your children live permanently in Australia, or more of your children live in Australia than in any other country

Have a sponsor, usually your child, who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident

Meet health and character requirements

For aged parent visas, be of Australian pension age at the time of application

The biological, adoptive, or step-parent of the sponsor,

Who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Sponsors will need to have a taxable income of at least $83,454.80 – it can be a combined income of partners

The sponsor/parent relationship requirements (ie: a parent must be the biological, adoptive, or step-parent of the sponsor and a step-parent can only apply if they are still in a married/de facto relationship with a biological parent of the sponsor)

Be aged at least 18 years of age

Be an Australian citizen/permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who has been usually resident in Australia for four years

Have met any prior sponsorship obligations

Have no adverse information unless it is reasonable to disregard the information

Have no debts to the Commonwealth or public health debts unless appropriate arrangements have been made for payment

A minimum household income threshold (based on the income of the sponsor, or the combined income of the sponsor and their spouse/partner and/or another child of the parent)

Provide police clearances for any country they have spent more than 12 months cumulatively in during the past 10 years

Authorise information to be shared with the visa applicant.

Be sponsored by a person who is an approved parent sponsor

Be at least 18 years of age

Be outside Australia (unless invited in writing to apply by the Department), for at least 90 days if the applicant holds or has previously held a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa

Not have engaged in payment for visas conduct

Provide evidence of access to funds

Provide evidence of health insurance

Not have an outstanding public health debt (unless appropriate arrangements have been made to repay the debt)

Satisfy health, character, and national security requirements.

Subclass 101 – Child visa (Offshore): For children applying from outside Australia.

Subclass 802 – Child visa (Onshore): For children already in Australia at the time of application.

Be the biological, adopted, or stepchild of an Australian citizen or permanent resident

Be under 25 years of age at the time of application

Be single – not married, engaged, or in a de facto relationship

Be financially dependent on the sponsoring parent if over 18 years of age

Be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen

Be biologically related to the applicant (although adoptive parents or stepparents may be eligible in certain circumstances)

Be at least 18 years of age (or have a spouse or de facto partner who meets this requirement and is eligible to sponsor)

Not have been convicted of, or currently facing prosecution for, any offences against a child (this also applies to the sponsor’s partner, if applicable)

Permission to live, and study in Australia

Access to Medicare

A pathway to Australian citizenship, if eligible

Travel to and from Australia for five years from the date of grant

An orphan, or their parents are unable to care for them

Younger than 18 years of age

Sponsored by their relative* who is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen

The child’s sibling or step-sibling

Grandparent or step-grandparent

Aunt, uncle, step-aunt or step-uncle

The current spouse or de fact partner of the child’s relative

Travel to and stay in Australia indefinitely

Work and study in Australia

Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses

Apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible)

Sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence

Travel to and from Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted (after that time, you will need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia).

Your (and your partner’s) only near relatives* are settled in Australia and are all Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens

One of your near relatives or their partner is prepared to be your sponsor

You have someone who will provide an assurance of support

You and your family members meet health and character requirements.

You or your partner have any near relatives, who are usually living outside Australia, or are only living in Australia on a temporary visa, Bridging visa or unlawfully.

Your sponsor (or their partner) was the holder of, or sponsored someone else for, a Remaining Relative visa (subclass 835 or subclass 115), Preferential Family visa (subclass 104) or Family visa (subclass 806).

Stay in Australia indefinitely as an Australian permanent resident

Apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible)

Travel to and from Australia as a permanent resident for five years from the date the visa is granted – after that time you will need to apply for another visa if you want to return to Australia.

Are sponsored by a relative or their partner who is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen

Demonstrate that you have been wholly or substantially dependent on your relative in Australia for financial support for your basic needs of food, shelter and clothing or because you have a disability which prevents you from working. This support must have been continuing for at least three (3) years

Meet the age requirements

Do not have a spouse or de facto partner

Have someone who will provide an assurance of support

Meet health and character requirements.

Old enough to be granted an age pension under the Social Security Act 1991

Not married or in a de facto relationship

Wholly or mostly dependent on your relative in Australia for financial support to meet your basic needs of food, shelter and clothing, and able to demonstrate that you have been dependent on your relative for a reasonable period (usually three years) before you lodge your application.

Stay in Australia indefinitely as an Australian permanent resident

Apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible)

Travel to and from Australia as a permanent resident for five years from the date the visa is granted – after that time you will need to apply for another visa if you want to return to Australia.

This visa is for someone who needs to move to or stay in Australia for one of the following reasons:
Care for a relative in Australia with a long-term medical condition, or
Assist a relative providing this care to a member of their family unit.
Has a long-term medical condition that means they cannot look after themselves in practical aspects of daily life, or
Needs permanent or long-term practical support to help them care for a member of their family in their household with such a medical condition.

You need to move to or reside in Australia to:
Care for a relative in Australia with a long-term medical condition, or
Assist a relative providing this care to a member of their family unit.

your relative (or their family member) has their condition assessed by BUPA

you are the only person who can provide the care that is needed

your relative or their partner can sponsor you

you are willing and able to provide substantial and continuing assistance

you fully understand what kind of care or assistance your relative needs.

your relative cannot reasonable get the care they need from any other relative in Australia or from welfare, hospital, nursing or community services in Australia

you and your family members meet health and character requirements.
